Every year, more than 1.2 million planes traverse the skies above Switzerland. Sita is challenging us to find a way to reduce the carbon footprint of this air traffic.
Switzerland's small size and the large number of planes flying overhead present a unique challenge to air traffic controllers. With such a small country, planes often have to change their route on the spot, adding an ecological concern to the already stressful job of ensuring planes don't crash into each other.
Our product tracks every plane flying over Switzerland and proposes new routes to air traffic controllers, who can then decide whether or not to radio the new route to the pilot. Functionally, the product is simple, as with such high stakes it is dangerous to rely solely on technology. Additionally, as air controllers work day and night, a light and dark mode was an absolute necessity.
